Although the meaning of Ayin is the eye, this word have to be linked with the word mayan, which means a source where water flows. The receiving eye is a source allowing the sunlight to illuminate us internally, as Ayin is the source by which we managed the shefa, abundant energy of the divine light. The eye is a microcosm summarizing the creation, by which the soul perceives the material world is manifested. The white of the eye is similar to the scroll of the Torah receiving ink, symbolized by the iris. Thus the eye is an intermediary between inside and outside Torah. The midrash notes that the Torah is an illumination for eyes and a light for all lamps as it is said, the mitzvah is a lamp and the Torah is light (Proverbs 6:23) (Autioth Rabbi Akivah). The Ayan origin, bear the following meanings: flow, watch, look through eye (by flowing tears).
